AftermorethanayearofcarefulplanningAnnaarrangedthefirstMother'sDaychurchserviceonMay101908inCraftonWestVirginia.ThenextyearAnnawasabletogetthecityofPhiladelphiawhereshelivedandworkedtoproclaimthesecondSundayofMayasanofficialMother'sDay--thefirstcitytodoso.AfterthreemoreyearsthestateofWestVirginiawhereAnna'smotherhadlivedmadeMother'sDayastatewideobservance--foraholidayinthenormalsensebutstilladaytorememberwhatmothershavedonefortheirchildrenandsociety.
