WilliamButlerYeats(13June1865–28January1939)wasanIrishpoetanddramatistandoneoftheforemostfiguresof20th-centuryliterature.ApillarofboththeIrishandEnglishliteraryestablishments,inhislateryearsYeatsservedasanIrishSenatorfortwoterms.HewasadrivingforcebehindtheIrishLiteraryRevival,andtogetherwithLadyGregoryandEdwardMartynfoundedtheAbbeyTheatre,andservedasitschiefduringitsearlyyears.In1923,hewasawardedaNobelPrizeinLiteratureforwhattheNobelCommitteedescribedas"inspiredpoetry,whichinahighlyartisticformgivesexpressiontothespiritofawholenation;"andhewasthefirstIrishmansohonored.YeatsisgenerallyconsideredoneofthefewwriterswhosegreatestworkswerecompletedafterbeingawardedtheNobelPrize;suchworksincludeTheTower(1928)andTheWindingStairandOtherPoems(1929)
YeatswasbornandeducatedinDublin,butspenthischildhoodinSligo.Hestudiedpoetryinhisyouth,andfromanearlyagewasfascinatedbybothIrishlegendsandtheoccult.Thosetopicsfeatureinthefirstphaseofhiswork,whichlastedroughlyuntiltheturnofthecentury.Hisearliestvolumeofversewaspublishedin1889,andthoseslowlypacedandlyricalpoemsdisplaydebtstoEdmundSpenserandPercyByssheShelley,aswellastothelyricismofthePre-Raphaelitepoets.
From1900,Yeats'poetrygrewmorephysicalandrealistic.Helargelyrenouncedthetranscendentalbeliefsofhisyouth,thoughheremainedpreoccupiedwithphysicalandspiritualmasks,aswellaswithcyclicaltheoriesoflife.OvertheyearsYeatsadoptedmanydifferentideologicalpositions,including,inthewordsofthecriticMichaelValdezMoses,"thoseofradicalnationalist,classicalliberal,reactionaryconservativeandmillenariannihilist".
