Thenumberofaccidentsinvolvingpedestrians(行人)wearingheadphonesisontherise,areportsuggests,causingfreshwarningfromroadsafetygroupsinBritain. AUS-basedstudyfoundatotalof116reportsofdeathorinjurytopedestrianswearingheadphonesbetween2004and2011,jumpingfrom16in2005to47in2011. Mostvictimsweremen(68%)andundertheageof30(67%),witharoundoneintenofallcases(9%)undertheageof18.Some89%ofthecasesoccurredinurbanareasandmorethanhalf(55%)ofthevictimswerestruckbytrains. Eighty-oneofthe116accidents(70%)resultedintheperson’sdeath---eventhoughawarningwassoundedinaroundathirdofthecases. Thestudyconcluded,“Theuseofheadphonemaybeasafetyrisktopedestrians,especiallyinenvironmentswithmovingvehicles(cars).Furtherresearchisneededtodetermineifandhowheadphoneusethreatenspedestriansafety.”Britishroadsafetygroupswarnedpedestrianstobecareful. FloorLieshout,directorofYouthForRoadSafety,said,“Thisstudyshowsoncemoretheimportanceofusingallofoursenseswhileweareneartraffic.Itisimportantthatwefindanattractivewaytomakeyouthlearnabouttherisksofwearingheadphonesintraffic.” AndrewHoward,whoistheheadofroadsafetyattheAutomobileAssociation,addedthatsomepedestrianscanbe“sofocusedintheirownlittleworldtheyforgettheworldgoingonaroundthem”.Thatcanincludeheadphonewearers,Howardsaid,butalsopeopletalkingonphones. However,Howardsaidthatmoreresearchesneededtobedone.
