MartinLutherKing,Jr.,(January15,1929-April4,1968)wasbornMichaelLutherKing,Jr.,butlaterhadhisnamechangedtoMartin.Hisgrandfatherbeganthefamily'slongtenureaspastorsoftheEbenezerBaptistChurchinAtlanta,servingfrom1914to1931;hisfatherhasservedfromthenuntilthepresent,andfrom1960untilhisdeathMartinLutheractedasco-pastor.MartinLutherattendedsegregatedpublicschoolsinGeorgia,graduatingfromhighschoolattheageoffifteen;hereceivedtheB.A.degreein1948fromMorehouseCollege,adistinguishedNegroinstitutionofAtlantafromwhichbothhisfatherandgrandfatherhadbeengraduated.AfterthreeyearsoftheologicalstudyatCrozerTheologicalSeminaryinPennsylvaniawherehewaselectedpresidentofapredominantlywhiteseniorclass,hewasawardedtheB.D.in1951.WithafellowshipwonatCrozer,heenrolledingraduatestudiesatBostonUniversity,completinghisresidenceforthedoctoratein1953andreceivingthedegreein1955InBostonhemetandmarriedCorettaScott,ayoungwomanofuncommonintellectualandartisticattainments.Twosonsandtwodaughterswerebornintothefamily.
In1954,MartinLutherKingacceptedthepastoraleoftheDexterAvenueBaptistChurchinMontgomery,Alabama.Alwaysastrongworkerforcivilrightsformembersofhisrace,Kingwas,bythistime,amemberoftheexecutivecommitteeoftheNationalAssociationfortheAdvancementofColoredPeople,theleadingorganizationofitskindinthenation.Hewasready,then,earlyinDecember,1955,toaccepttheleadershipofthefirstgreatNegrononviolentdemonstrationofcontemporarytimesintheUnitedStates,thebusboycottdescribedbyGunnarJahninhispresentationspeechinhonorofthelaureate.Theboycottlasted382days.OnDecember21,1956,aftertheSupremeCourtoftheUnitedStateshaddeclaredunconstitutionalthelawsrequiringsegregationonbuses,Negroesandwhitesrodethebusesasequals.Duringthesedaysofboycott,Kingwasarrested,hishomewasbombed,hewassubjectedtopersonalabuse,butatthesametimeheemergedasaNegroleaderofthefirstrank.
In1957hewaselectedpresidentoftheSouthernChristianLeadershipConference,anorganizationformedtoprovidenewleadershipforthenowburgeoningcivilrightsmovement.TheidealsforthisorganizationhetookfromChristianity;itsoperationaltechniquesfromGandhi.Intheeleven-yearperiodbetween1957and1968,Kingtraveledoversixmillionmilesandspokeovertwenty-fivehundredtimes,appearingwherevertherewasinjustice,protest,andaction;andmeanwhilehewrotefivebooksaswellasnumerousarticles.Intheseyears,heledamassiveprotestinBirmingham,Alabama,thatcaughttheattentionoftheentireworld,providingwhathecalledacoalitionofconscience.andinspiringhis"LetterfromaBirminghamJail",amanifestooftheNegrorevolution;heplannedthedrivesinAlabamafortheregistrationofNegroesasvoters;hedirectedthepeacefulmarchonWashington,D.C.,of250,000peopletowhomhedeliveredhisaddress,"lHaveaDream",heconferredwithPresidentJohnF.KennedyandcampaignedforPresidentLyndonB.Johnson;hewasarrestedupwardsoftwentytimesandassaultedatleastfourtimes;hewasawardedfivehonorarydegrees;wasnamedManoftheYearbyTimemagazinein1963;andbecamenotonlythesymbolicleaderofAmericanblacksbutalsoaworldfigure.
