OtherinventionshadalsohelpedmakeitpossibleforAmericanstochangetheirdailydiets.Growingpopulationsincreasedfooddemandandstimulatedfruitandvegetablefarmerstoraisemoreproduce.Railroadrefrigeratorcarsmadeitpossibletoshipgrowersandpackedmeatfreshtofarawayplaceswithoutworryingtheywouldgobad.Thusbythe1890'snortherncitysettlerscouldenjoysouthernandwesternstrawberriesgrapesandtomatoesforamonthatmostinthepastforuptosixmonthsoftheyear.Besidesincreaseduseoficeboxesmadeitpossibleforfamiliestostorefoodwhichcouldeasilygobad.Aneasymeansofproducingicehadbeeninventedinthe1870'sandby1900thenationhadmorethantwothousandiceplantsmostofwhichmadehomedeliveries.Theiceboxbecamecommonequipmentinmosthomesandremainedsountiltherefrigeratorreplaceditinthe1920'sand1930's.Almosteveryonenowhasavarietyofdiet.
