PerhapsthatexplainswhyanewbookbyBjornLombardreceivedsomuchpublicity.ThatbookTheSkepticalEnvironmentalistdeclaresthatit measuresthe“realstateoftheworld’’asfine.Ofcourseanotherexplanationisthedeeppocketsofsomebigbusinesseswithspecialinterests.IndeedMr.Lombard’sviewsaresimilartothoseofsomeIndustry-fundedorganizationswhichstarthugeactivitiesthoughthemediatoconfusethepublicaboutissueslikeglobalwarming.
SoitwasstrangetoseeMr.Limburg’sbookgolargelyunchallengedinthemediathoughhisbeliefswerecontrarytomostscientificopinions.OnenationalnewspaperinCanadarananumberofarticlesandreviewsfullofwordsofpraiseevenwiththeconclusionthat“AfterLimburgtheenvironmentalmovementwillbegintodiedown.”
Suchone-sidedviewsshouldhaveimmediatelybeenchallenged.ButonlyadifferentreviewappearedinNaturearespectedsciencemagazinewithspecificreadership.ThereviewremarkedthatMr.Limburg’s“preferenceforunexaminedmaterialsisincredible(不可信的)”.
Acritical(批判的)eyeisvaluableandthemediashouldpresentinformationinsuchawaythatcouldallowpeopletomakeinformeddecisions.Unfortunatelythatisofteninaccessibleasblockedbythedesiretobeshockingortodefendsomespecialinterest.Peoplemightbecomehalf-blindbeforeaworldpartiallyexhibitedbythemedia.That’sashamebecausemattersconcerningthehealthoftheplanetarefartooimportanttobetreatedlightly.
