TheUnionFlagbefore1801
WhenJamesVIofScotlandinheritedasJamesIofEnglandin1603,thecrownsoftheKingdomofEnglandandtheKingdomofScotlandwereunitedinhim,althougheachremainedindependentstates.
On12April1606,anewflagtorepresentthispersonalunionbetweenEnglandandScotlandwasspecifiedinaroyaldecree,accordingtowhichtheflagofEngland(aredcrosswithawhitebackground,knownasStGeorge'sCross)andtheflagofScotland(awhitesaltirewithabluebackground,knownastheSaltireorSaintAndrew'sCross)wouldbe"joynedtogetheraccordingtotheformemadebyourheralds,andsentbyUstoourAdmeralltobepublishedtoourSubjects."Theoriginalsketcheswhichaccompaniedthisspecificationarelost.UntiltheActsofUnion1707itwaspracticefortheflaginScotlandtohavetheSaltireovertheStGeorge'sCrossandviceversawhenflowninEngland[citationneeded].ThisroyalflagwasatfirstonlyforuseatseaoncivilandmilitaryshipsofbothScotlandandEngland.In1634,itsusewasrestrictedtothemonarch'sships.Landforcescontinuedtousetheirrespectivenationalbanners.
AftertheActsofUnion1707,theflaggainedaregularisedstatus,as"theensignarmorialoftheKingdomofGreatBritain",thenewlycreatedstate.Itwasthenadoptedbylandforcesaswell.VariousshadesofbluehavebeenusedintheSaltireovertheyears.ThegroundofthecurrentUnionFlagisadeep"navy"blue(Pantone280),whilethecurrentlyacceptedSaltireusesalighter"royal"blue(Pantone300),followingtheScottishParliament'srecommendationof2003.
WaleshadnoexplicitrecognitionintheflagbecauseWaleshadbeenannexedbyEdwardIofEnglandin1282,andsincetheLawsinWalesActs1535-1542waslegallypartoftheKingdomofEngland.(Thepresent-dayFlagofWalesandStDavid'sCrossemerged,orre-emerged,inthe20thcentury:theformerbasedonaRoyalbadgeandthelatteronthearmsoftheDioceseofSaintDavid's.)TheKingdomofIreland,whichhadexistedasapersonalunionwithEnglandsince1541,waslikewiseunrepresentedintheoriginalUnionFlag.
Thepre-1801UnionFlagisalsoshowninthecantonoftheGrandUnionFlag(alsoknownastheCongressflag,TheFirstNavyEnsign,TheCambridgeFlag,andTheContinentalColors),thefirstwidely-usedFlagoftheUnitedStates.
Theblazonfortheoldflag,tobecomparedwiththecurrentflag,isAzure,theCrossSaltireofStAndrewArgentsurmountedbytheCrossofStGeorgeGules,fimbriatedofthesecond.
