ThestudentsqualifiedforthenationalcompetitionbywinningaregionalcompetitiononJan.17inColumbus.Bywinningthenationaleventthestudentsearnedanall-expensespaidtriptoSpaceCampinHuntsvilleAla.accordingtoaBexleyschooldistrictnewsrelease.
FutureCityaimstoarouseinterestinsciencetechnologyengineeringandmathamongyoungpeople.BexleyteammemberswereTomKrajnakAbbySharpWyattPeeryElizabethMaherAaronHutchinsonandTrumanHaycock.TheyworkinteamsundertheguidanceofateacherMargaretEnglehardtandavolunteerengineerMarkShermandesignandbuildacityoftomorrow.MayorJohnBrennanpresentedthestudentsduringarecentBexleyCityCouncilmeeting.
EachteamintheFutureCitycompetitionplansitscityusingSimCitysoftwareandcreatesamodeltoshowaphysicalrepresentationofonesectionofthecity.Teammembersmustwritebothanessayabouttheyearlythemeandanabstractabouttheircity.Theyalsomustmakeapresentationtojudges.
Focusingoneco-responsibilitytheBexleyteambuilt“Novo-Mondum”anIcelandiccityintheyear2171.Krajnaksaidtheteam’sprojectincludedanewwatersystemforeachresidentunitanda500-wordessayonusingbacteriatopurifywater.“Weusedouressayandabstracttobuildamodel”hesaid.“Itwashardtoorganizewhichbuildingwouldgowherewhateachbuildingdoesandhowtomakeitlookgood.”
Englehardtsaidherstudentsdidagoodjobansweringimpromptu(即席)questionsduringtheregionalcompetition.“Theycanthinkontheirfeet”shesaid.PrincipalHarleyWilliamssaidtheschoolisveryproudofthestudents’performance.
