TheSovietUnionsentthefirstspacestationintospacein1971.ThisspacestationwascalledSalyut1.Salyut1wasdesignedasaplacewherepeoplecouldlivewhiletheyobservedspaceanddidexperiments.Thefirstgroupofastronautslivedtherefor23days.TheSoviet UnionwentontomakesevenmoreSalyutspacestations.Ataboutthesametimethe UnitedStatesbuiltitsownspacestationcalledSkylab.

Astronautsvisitedandoftenlivedinthesespacestationsforashorttime.Howeveritwasn^untilthelate1980swhentheSovietUnionsenttheMirspacestationthatpeoplebegantoliveinspaceforalongertime.Mirstayedinspacefrom1989until2001whenitwasdecidedthatthespacestationwastoooldandnolongersafetoliveiaLivinginspacestationsseemstobefunbutastronautsfacemanyproblems.Oneofthemisfood.AllthemealsonspacestationsareputtogetheronEarthandsenttherebyspaceshuttle.Becausethefoodhastolastalongtime (sometimesuptothreemonths)alotofithastobestoredincans.Thespacestationdoesnothaveafridgebutithasacoolroomtokeepfruitandvegetablesfresh.Astronautsalsoeatmanyotherfoodssuchasdriedmeatthatdonotneedspecialcare.
