Recordedinseveralformsasshownbelow,thisisnowarguablyanAnglo-FrenchsurnamebutdefinatelyoneofmedievalFrenchorigins.ItislocationalfromeitherthevillageofQuincy-sous-SenartinthedepartementofSeine-et-Oise,orQuincy-VoisinsinSeine-et-Marne,orCuinchyinthePas-de-Calais.Allderivetheirnamesfromthepre3rdcenturyGallo-RomanpersonalnameQuintas,meaningfifthborn,andthenameofafamousRomanclan.ThesurnamewasintroducedintoEnglandbyfollowersofDukeWilliamofNormandyatthetimeoftheConquestofEnglandin1066,thesurnamebeingoneoftheearliestrecordedanywhereintheworld.InthemodernidiomthesurnamespellingsincludedeQuincey,Quince,Quincey,Quinsee,Quinseyandothers.AmongsttheearlyrecordingsarethoseofHenrideQuenciintheDanelawDocumentsofEnglandin1154,whilstfromthechurchregisterswehaveBennetQuincewhomarriedThomasGeeonDecember14th1592,atSt.Dunstan'sStepney.TheEnglishwriterThomasdeQuincey(1785-1859),wasborninManchester,toafamilywhointhe13thcenturyheldtheearldomofWinchester.ThefirstrecordedspellingofthefamilynameisshowntobethatofSaerdeQuincy.Thiswasdated1153-1163,intherecordsoftheKnightTemplars(Crusaders).Surnamesbecamenecessarywhengovernmentsintroducedpersonaltaxation.InEnglandthiswassometimesknownasPollTax.Throughoutthecenturies,surnamesineverycountryhavecontinuedto"develop"oftenleadingtoastonishingvariantsoftheoriginalspelling.
